Restoration Consulting & Project Management Services

Both Jack and Kim have hands-on experience working on restoration projects and together they have restored a handful of houses and more than 500 historic windows. They have presented more than two dozen wood window repair workshops in eastern New York and Western Massachusetts and as such bring a unique perspective to their clients, particularly historic homeowners that are looking for guidance in their own DIY projects. They also have extensive experience working with small rental property owners, homeowners, and small building committees to prioritize repair projects, scope the work, solicit bidders or contractor estimates, and provide oversight and “Restoration Management” services for small-scale projects where a large general contracting firm is not warranted. These services aren’t typically available from large architectural firms, but are critical when a small non-profit grant project or home repair project needs knowledgeable guidance and the management of contractors, funder requirements, and someone to perform basic owner’s representative duties.

For small homeowners looking for guidance to restore their historic home’s charm and character, Jack and Kim are not afraid of peeking underneath the many modern, man-made layers that hide the true beauty and character of many historic buildings in our region. In fact, they believe in practicing what they preach and leading by example. As such, they have taken on this “removal” work on their own properties. Where once aluminum soffit panning was tacked and harboring squirrels, beautiful eaves with sculpted rafter tails have been revealed and restored. New cedar-clad tapered columns now stand strong and proud where once they were wrapped in aluminum hiding significant rot and signs of past insect infestation. The beautifully poetic blending of textures between cedar clapboards and shingles to delineate the changes in floor levels has been reinstated or simply cleaned up and revived with fresh paint or stain giving these homes that once were eye-sores, renewed historic charm and character. The partners at Landmark Consulting are veterans in “stripping off artificial layers” whether it is aluminum, fake brick, asbestos, or asphalt shingles, vinyl windows or vinyl siding, or reopening a porch, and are more than happy to assist property owners in what can often seem to be a scary endeavor. We can develop an approach that keeps it from being overwhelming, breaking it into manageable phases of removal, repair, and renewal.
